We are currently taking applications for the 2022-2023 School year. Enrollment is open until August 31st, 2022. Apply now!
Dear Teachers, Librarians. and School Administrators,
We are a nonprofit called Appalachian Literacy Initiative. Our program is designed to increase reading among area students by putting quality new books into their hands. Research shows there is a correlation between reading scores and access to books in the home: students that have fewer books in the home are much less likely to read at proficient level.
We are looking for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms to be a part of our program this coming school year. We will give each of your students a new book of their choosing from our book list 4 times a year (ideally mid-September, December before Christmas break, late January/ early February and mid-April before summer vacation). We will send you a classroom set of the books on each list to help the students make their selection. Your teachers will tally up the students’ selections and email the order to us. We will then ship the books directly to your school for the teachers to hand out to their classrooms.
In addition to giving students books, we would like to provide teachers in your 4th, 5th and 6th grades with books for small reading circles for their classrooms.
We ask that you provide us with some basic demographic information and test scores before we begin and each year that your students continue the program.
Attached is our application form. You may email it back to us at appalachianlit@gmail.com. Our website is readappalachian.org. Please contact us with any questions.
We look forward to working with you.
